Keraflex is a thermokeratoplastic procedure meaning it uses heat to re-mould the corneal shape. A ring-like probe is used to deliver short bursts of microwave energy in an annulus to the corneal surface. The heat from these energy bursts then flattens the cornea and the cone regularising the corneal shape leaving the patient better visual acuity. A modified collagen cross linking technique is then applied to ensure the shape change is permanent. Although glasses or contact lenses may still be required for good vision following the procedure, the tolerance of these and the visual outcome is dramatically improved.
